Cllr Gareth Kitchen - Green Party

Community information for Wotton-under-Edge Ward
Cllr Kitchen

23rd April 2024

Gareth is well known in Wotton-under-Edge as the owner of Cookability. This job brings him into daily contact with the community and keeps him connected and informed about local issues.

He served on Wotton Town Council for three years in the early 2000s and feels that he can draw on that experience in the role of district councillor.

“I want our community and high street to embrace the changes that will be needed as the world moves to ‘net zero’ and I feel that I can help shape that future,” he says.

He would particularly like to encourage the council to publish more data about the economic health of the district’s towns. “Getting this data into the hands of local residents, businesses and entrepreneurs means that they could identify and take advantage of new opportunities. This simple, cost-effective change would nurture new localised economic growth, possibly in novel and unexpected ways.”

Originally from rural south Wales, Gareth moved to Wotton in 2001 and was later attracted to Stroud because of what he calls its “notoriety as a hotbed of political activism”. He is an active volunteer with Stroud Against Racism, and has been involved with scrutiny at Gloucestershire Constabulary, where he has excellent working relationships with senior officers.

“I’m well known for, and comfortable about, holding authority to account with quite dogged determination,” he says.

He is a strong supporter of proportional representation in elections, because the present system favours the main parties. “It’s just not right that Gloucestershire’s six MPs are all Conservative and white – and will quite probably be all male after the general election.”

He believes that much more decision-making power needs to be devolved down to the local level from Westminster, and is a supporter of Yes Cymru, the campaign for an independent Wales.

He joined the Green Party because of its ethos advocating an economy rooted in sustainability and pursuit of social progress rather than economic growth above all else.

Before moving into retail, Gareth worked in IT and still enjoys working with computers. He is an advocate of open-sourced software, believing it offers users more privacy. “Many of the societal problems we see today are rooted in business practices of tax avoiding American internet conglomerates and their intrusive surveillance advertising practices.” he says.

His hobbies include cooking and DIY. He is a long time Forest Green Rovers supporter and both his children were FGR ambassadors. #GreenParty

In the nineteenth century rioting Chartists on Rodborough common were reported in newspapers and the Whiteway Colony was formed. In the twentieth century, Quakers and adherents of Rudolf Steiner were significant presences in the town.

In 1976 the campaign against the Ring Road [SCAR] won a public enquiry, the inspector finding that the proposed Ring Road would be ‘an environmental disaster’. In 1977 an application to demolish and redevelop four listed buildings in the High St was turned down. In 1980 the District Council and Millwards, the owners decided to demolish the buildings on grounds of safety. Resistance to this, saved the buildings through a combination of direct action and High Court actions.

There have been many campaigns since, sometimes local, some with a national reach such as the birth of Extinction Rebellion. Numerous projects have arisen from commitment to our community and shaping our town, such as Shire Training Workshops, the British School, Stroud Preservation Trust and the Stroud Valleys Project, the Community Planning conference, the Farmers Market, Lansdown Hall and others.

Speakers include:

  • Tim Harrison, Stroud High Street Action Group
  • Adrian Oldman, Defence of the Stratford Park Trees
  • Gill Tavner, Just Stop Oil.

Following the speakers there will be an opportunity for the audience to join the discussion and debate.

A chart showing the number of Green Party Councillors. Starting at zero in the 90's now on a seemingly exponential trajectory....

This is a very powerful graphic. Where there is choice it dispels doubt. It re-enforces Green policy and shows direction of travel. The Green Party should use it more for the local elections on May 2nd imho. #GreenParty

A hundred or so people in a local community meeting.

A phenomenal turn out today at the trinity rooms to discuss how we, as a community can work together to make our town safe from the creeping fascist agenda.

A notice from my local council saying that my nomination form, for election to district council, is all in order. :)

My decision last year to try and do something positive in the community is coming into sharper focus and beginning to feel much more real.

On a positive note I've got further than Lawrence Fox in the electoral process.... #GreenParty

IMPORTANT SEE UPDATE POST.

The material promoting Hitler and The Protocol of Zion

I'm absolutely appalled to discover that there are Nazi meetings are being organised in Stroud towards the end of April.

One meeting will celebrate Hitler’s birthday, but if that isn’t bold enough, the other meeting will promote the Protocols Of the Elders of Zion – a fraudulent document from 1903 used by the Nazis and still being used today to incite antisemitism.

This is not satire, this is a nightmare reality. It is shocking and unacceptable.

ACTION: There is a public meeting from 3pm on Saturday the 30th of March at the Trinity Rooms (Field Road, Stroud, GL5 2HZ) to discuss what action we can take as a community. I'd encourage people to attend.

ACTION: If you can't attend I would encourage you to report this to the Police as the material being circulated is clearly incites hatred on protected characteristic grounds. (Public Order Act 1986 c. 64 Part 3A)

I've blurred the material so I don't fall foul of the law, but the venue, dates and times remain visible so you can report the event to the Police via their online form as Stroud District Council have advised:-

https://www.gloucestershire.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime/

PS. Stroud District Council have advised that there is very little that they can do to prevent this sort of thing as they are taking place in private venues.

PPS. For reasons I fail to understand the administrators of Wotton's Facebook group refused this post without offering a reason from my private Facebook acct.
